Fidgeting in Children

Your child may exhibit socially unacceptable behavior that will get him in trouble and lead to him having a hard time making friends. Hyperactivity among children is a common problem that often goes undiagnosed, making it very hard for your child to interact with his peers in a healthy manner. Behavioral therapy can be very helpful in improving your child's way of thinking and behavioral patterns.

The primary symptoms of ADHD in children are inattention/distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity or restlessness. All symptoms do not have to be present for a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder to be reached however signs of inattention must always be present in two or more situation with the two most common being home and school. Symptoms of preschool children often include anxiousness, having problems communicating and interacting, and generally poor or inconsiderate behavior.

Many preschool children have problems interacting, communicate poorly, are anxious, and would generally be considered to exhibit bad or unruly behavior. They are inattentive and may be noticed daydreaming or staring into space. They may fidget and squirm. They may be impatient or answer out of turn. As they grow older and the condition starts to evolve attention deficit hyperactivity disorder children may fidget with their legs or hands, talk incessantly, forget easily, and be woefully disorganized.

In summary, ADHD is a biological condition of the brain with a genetic backdrop. Adults with ADHD who have looked back on their childhood experienced feel as if their creativity was strangled or they were a round pet trying to fit into a square hole. Generally the ADHD child is not less intelligent than their peers, they just process information in a different way requiring a more flexible and understand environment for success.

Mental illness in children is on the rise for many reasons: bullying at school, being in a hurricane, violence in the family and/or community, seeing a school shooting, worries about terrorism, and a change in brain chemistry at maturation. An increasing number of children are experiencing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Depression in children, including elementary age kids, is on the rise. If you search the internet you will find many facts about mental illness in children. These facts tell a story.

A spirited child is one that has a lively, creative, keen, eager and strong personality. Although these children are overflowing with fantastic qualities, they are often labeled as being demanding, stubborn, inflexible, whiny and loud. These traits are often seen as unfavorable for those that expect children to be still, wait, sit, be quiet and, in general, conform.

As the toddler starts to approach the age of 4 things start to change: he becomes even more active, fidgeting, playing finger drums, and shuffling his feet. His attention span wanes, thus changing tasks constantly. He gathers all of his toys, plays with each one briefly, then moves on to the next task. Dinner gatherings becomes a case of what will little Johnny will do next. The families Sunday drive around the neighborhood turns stressful with car windows going up and down, ashtrays opening and closing, kicking the back of Dads seat, then shouting his famous cry of "Are We There Yet".
